Should students be allowed to use dialects in a classroom setting?

There is a yes and no answer to every opinionated question. In class, we were asked to make a discussion web and posting both sides to the answer to the question. Here is what our group came up with:

Yes
  • Children can use their own language as a learning tool.
  • Allowing cultural differences to be expressed in a classroom can help ones learning process.
  • Exposure to different dialogues for future usage.
No
  • Children need to learn and understand the Standard English language starting at a young age.
  • It i grammatically incorrect which affects fluency.
  • Prevents unity.
In my opinion, teachers should not allow dialects in the classroom because in affects the children in the long run when they need to know and have good practice of standard English. Students can talk how they are used to at home, but when they step in the classroom they should know what is expected of them and use proper English when communicating to the Educator. It will only become beneficial in the student's future when they are communicating to people of high standings in our community. Using dialect in a classroom only encourages speakin improper. Therefore, the more practice they get and if they can assume its okay at school, then when will they believe it's not okay?
